Lisa Grimes has been training in martial arts for over nine years, having first stepped onto the mats in what began as a light-hearted decision — a free T-shirt for her son — and quickly grew into a passion that would transform her life.
Specialising in Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts, Lisa has built strong foundations in striking, conditioning, and practical self-defence, and is keen to continue developing her skills further in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Her journey through martial arts has challenged her both physically and mentally, shaping her into the confident and resilient instructor she is today.
Lisa is particularly proud of her progression through the belt system, with her first grading and 1st Degree Black Belt standing out as defining achievements. Earning her black belt was one of the hardest things she has ever done, pushing her well beyond her comfort zone and proving just how strong and determined she had become.
As an instructor at YAMA, Lisa loves sharing the skills and lessons she has learned over the years with the students, each of whom brings something unique to every class. Her favourite moments come from seeing students succeed — especially those who have struggled — and watching the confidence shift when something finally clicks.
Lisa believes YAMA stands out because of its exceptional instructor team and the support behind the scenes, who consistently deliver high-quality seminars, events, and fight nights. Their dedication to every single student is something she is proud to be part of.
Looking ahead, Lisa’s goal is simple but powerful: to continue sharing her knowledge and passion with as many students as possible, helping them grow in confidence, discipline, and belief in themselves — both on and off the mats.
In addition to their teaching role, Mrs Grimes is also a member of the YAMA Examiners Panel and regularly conducts both in-club gradings and YAMA panel gradings, helping to uphold the high technical standards, consistency, and professionalism across the academy.
